A Little More Information Small projects are great; they don't take very long, they are fairly inexpensive, and they don't have to take a huge spot on your wall. But what do you do with these pieces when you're done?
For small stitched projects, I’ve come up with a simple framing concept, the open fillet frame. These small frames are very narrow in width, running from 1/8” to about 1”, and come in a wide variety of shapes and colors. They can be very plain or very ornate; whatever fits the style of the piece of needlework to be framed. In the framing industry, these small mouldings are used as a decorative wood fillet between two mats or along the inner lip of a larger frame moulding. When I use them for a small piece, I just reverse the cut and add a mat board backing. There are mouldings available that can be custom painted and others made of exotic woods. The stitching is stretched on a piece of mat board and then fitted into the fillet frame from the front. If desired, the stitched piece can be padded. I like to use bamboo batting, but any batting will work. |
The mounted stitching is then place in the frame on top of a shallow foam core spacer. The spacer fills the hollow created by the stretched ground fabric on the back of the mat board. No glass is used.
I developed this frame when I first joined The American Needlepoint Guild and needed to have a nametag (seen above). I stitched my nametag sampler style, and then added a tiny colonial looking frame with screw eyes at the top and a cord to go around my neck. I even made the cord. I’ve also used open fillet frames for ornaments usually choosing a fancy ornate gold fillet. They work wonderfully for small seasonal pieces that will be stored part of the year. I just put each piece in it’s own plastic bag for safe keeping when I’m not displaying it on a small easel. One of my clients uses them for the stitched anniversary gifts that she sends to her husband stationed in Afghanistan. They ship very easily and can “hang” in his tent.
